One big responsibility of any homeowner is protecting his or her home – and in Southwest Florida, that means knowing the history of the area.
As anyone knows, this part of the country is hurricane country. From May to November, hurricane season is in full swing, and Florida is in the target zone. Reviewing the history of past hurricanes to hit Collier County, Lee County, and other areas in this part of the state is one way homeowners can fully appreciate the need for high-quality hurricane protection for their homes. If you live in Marco Island, Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Sanibel Island or Cape Coral, you must read this!
One of the most powerful storms to ever make landfall, this Category 5 hurricane struck Miami first in August, 1992 before moving over southwest Florida on its way to Louisiana. Until Hurricane Katrina landed in 2005, this was the costliest natural disaster in American history, with damage exceeding $47 billion in today’s dollars. At its peak, Andrew produced winds at a top speed of 175 miles per hour – a mind-boggling speed for a storm!
Before Andrew, there was Donna – a monster Category 5 hurricane that made landfall in Florida in September, 1960 with sustained winds of up to 115 miles per hour. It hit land between Naples and Fort Meyers and tore through the state, costing significant damage – particularly to homes that, at the time, had little hurricane protection installed.
A more recent storm was Hurricane Charley, a Category 4 hurricane that swarmed Lee County, Florida in 2004 and ripped through the state, causing roughly $19 billion worth of damage. Even modern, well-built homes were severely damaged or destroyed, especially ones that lacked adequate hurricane protection.
Reviewing the history of these three major storms – and the countless storms that are less powerful but by no means harmless – just goes to show how critical it is to have modern, strong, and durable hurricane protection for your home. If you want protection for powerful winds that keep storms at bay from shattering your windows and doors and causing costly damage to your home, you need to learn from history and protect your home today.
