In the storm family, hurricanes are the bigger, meaner siblings to a tropical storm; however, that does not mean that a tropical storm cannot cause some serious damage on its own. In fact, tropical storms are not the average rainstorm and there is more to it than some lightning and harmless thunder! These storms are capable of being just as hazardous as a hurricane because its winds reach upwards of 40 mph which can still violently kick up debris. And as with any storm, it comes with rain which means potential flooding – as southwest Florida found out a month or two ago.
Last week, this exact thing occurred when the tropical storm named Khanun hit North Korea. The aftermath of its arrival is a reminder on just how destructive a tropical storm can be. Khanun brought not only wind-speeds of 40 mph but also nearly 8 inches of rain which worked together to cause major damage. Before the storm dissipated, it was responsible for thousands of destroyed and flooded homes. There are numerous people homeless now because of the storm.
Sadly, not only were homes destroyed but approximately 11,960 meters of roads and bridges were demolished along with 568 acres of farmland. Alongside the tropical storm, the rain it brought flooded railways, electric supply lines, and communication networks. This negated communication and smashed the water supply system. Because of this, some cities had to go without drinking water.
It is hard to believe that all of this wreckage was caused by a tropical storm. This goes to show that a hurricane is not the only destructive force able to cause major damage. Likewise, it doesn’t have to be the threat of a hurricane to inspire you to protect your home!
Fortunately, according to the National Hurricane Center, the Atlantic is clear of any potential storm systems that could turn into tropical storms, so we’re in the clear at least for a few more days.
